What to Do in a Dental Emergency (Knocked Out Tooth)

Accidents happen—whether from a sports injury, a fall, or a collision. If a permanent tooth is entirely knocked out (avulsed), time is of the absolute essence.

Step-by-Step Action Plan

  1. Find the Tooth: Pick it up by the crown (the white chewing part), NEVER the root. Touching the root damages the delicate cells needed for reattachment.
  2. Brief Rinse (If Dirty): If it has dirt on it, gently rinse it with cold milk or saline for no more than 10 seconds. Do not scrub it.
  3. Try to Reinsert: If possible, gently slide the tooth back into its socket and bite down on a clean cloth or gauze to hold it.
  4. Store It Safely: If you cannot reinsert it, place the tooth in a small container of cold milk or keep it inside your cheek (if old enough not to swallow it). Water is detrimental to the root cells!

The Golden Window

You have an optimal window of about 30 to 60 minutes to get to an emergency dentist for the highest chances of successful reimplantation.

Dr. Mani Sundar's Note: "Don't panic! Grab the tooth, drop it in milk, and head straight to the clinic. If it's a baby tooth, do not reinsert it, but definitely see us to check for bone damage."
