Whether you're a teenager in school or an adult who finally decided to fix that crowding — braces are an investment. But they demand extra care. Food gets trapped easily, plaque builds up around brackets, and one careless bite can mean a broken wire and an emergency visit.
Daily Cleaning Routine
- Brush after every meal — not just morning and night. Carry a travel toothbrush to school or office.
- Use an interdental brush (the tiny bottle-brush shaped ones) to clean around brackets and under wires. Regular brushing alone misses 40% of surfaces.
- Floss with a floss threader — it's tedious but essential. Threading floss under the wire lets you clean between teeth properly.
- Use fluoride mouthwash before bed to strengthen enamel in hard-to-reach areas.
- Check in the mirror after cleaning — look for food stuck around brackets.
Foods to Avoid
- Hard foods: Raw carrots, apples (cut them into pieces instead), murukku, hard nuts, ice
- Sticky foods: Caramel, toffee, chewing gum, sticky halwa, jujubes
- Biting into food: Don't bite directly into corn on the cob, whole apples, or sugarcane. Cut food into small pieces.
- Very crunchy snacks: Popcorn kernels, hard chips, and bhel puri can dislodge brackets
Dealing with Discomfort
- Soreness after adjustments is normal — it lasts 2–3 days. Eat soft foods (curd rice, idli, soup) during this time.
- Use orthodontic wax on brackets that irritate your cheeks or lips.
- Salt water rinses help soothe irritated tissue.
- Over-the-counter pain relief (paracetamol) is fine for adjustment soreness.
What Happens If You Don't Clean Properly?
We see it unfortunately often — braces come off to reveal straight teeth... covered in white spots (decalcification) from poor hygiene. These white marks are permanent enamel damage and are entirely preventable with proper brushing.
Bottom Line: "Braces fix alignment, but only you can prevent cavities and staining during treatment. Five extra minutes of cleaning each day will make a massive difference when the braces come off." — Dr. Mani Sundar
