Congratulations — you've taken a major step toward restoring your smile with a dental implant. Now, proper care during recovery is crucial. With over 800 implants placed at our clinic, here's the recovery guide we give every patient.
First 24 Hours
- Bite on gauze for 30–60 minutes. Some oozing is normal for 24 hours.
- Ice pack on the cheek — 20 minutes on, 20 off. This dramatically reduces swelling.
- Eat only soft, cool foods: Curd rice, mashed idli, banana, cold soup. Avoid hot food and drinks.
- Don't disturb the area: No poking with your tongue or fingers. No spitting or using straws.
- Sleep with head elevated using an extra pillow.
- Take prescribed medications before the anaesthesia wears off.
Days 2–7: Early Healing
- Swelling peaks on days 2–3, then gradually improves.
- Start warm salt water rinses from day 2 — gently, 4–5 times daily.
- Gradually introduce warm (not hot) soft foods — upma, khichdi, dal, appam.
- Absolutely no smoking — smoking is the #1 cause of implant failure.
- Brush other teeth normally but avoid the surgical site.
Weeks 2–4: Healing Phase
- Stitches are usually removed at 7–10 days.
- You can gradually return to normal foods — but avoid chewing hard items directly on the implant side.
- The implant is integrating with your jawbone (osseointegration) — this takes 3–6 months.
Long-Term Care
Once your final crown is placed, care for your implant like a natural tooth: brush twice daily, floss around the implant, and get professional cleanings every 6 months. With proper care, dental implants can last 20+ years — many last a lifetime.
Key Point: "The surgery is just the beginning. The real success of an implant depends on how well you care for it during healing and after. Follow these steps, and your implant will serve you for decades." — Dr. Mani Sundar
