Veneers vs Crowns: What's the Difference?

When looking to restore a damaged or discolored tooth, you'll likely encounter two main options: Dental Veneers and Dental Crowns. Both are fantastic solutions, but they serve different primary purposes.

Dental Veneers: The Cosmetic Shield

Veneers are wafer-thin, custom-made porcelain shells that bond exclusively to the front surface of a tooth. They require very little enamel removal.

  • Best for: Discolored, slightly chipped, or mildly misaligned front teeth.
  • Focus: Primarily cosmetic enhancements (Smile makeovers).

Dental Crowns: The Protective Cap

A crown is a full restorative "cap" that covers the entire tooth, 360 degrees, down to the gum line. It requires more substantial reshaping of the natural tooth.

  • Best for: Weak, severely decayed, fractured teeth, or post-root canal protection.
  • Focus: Structural integrity and heavy-duty restoration function.
Making the Choice: "If your tooth is relatively healthy but you want a perfect aesthetic, we look at veneers. If the tooth lacks structural strength, a crown is mandatory for long-term survival."
