All Is Not Lost

Missing Just One Tooth? Here's Why You Shouldn't Ignore It

You lost a tooth — maybe from an accident, maybe from decay. It's in the back, not visible when you smile, so you decide to leave it. This is one of the most common and costly dental mistakes.

What Happens When You Ignore a Missing Tooth

  • Adjacent teeth shift: Neighbouring teeth gradually tilt into the empty space, creating new gaps and misalignment.
  • Opposing tooth over-erupts: The tooth above (or below) the gap starts to grow out of its socket because there's nothing to bite against.
  • Bone loss: The jawbone beneath the missing tooth starts to shrink (resorb) because it's no longer stimulated by a tooth root. Within a year, you can lose 25% of bone width.
  • Bite problems: Shifting teeth change your bite, leading to TMJ pain, uneven wear, and difficulty chewing.
  • More tooth loss: The chain reaction often leads to losing additional teeth within 5–10 years.

Your Replacement Options

  • Dental Implant (Best Option): A titanium post placed in the jawbone that acts as an artificial root, topped with a ceramic crown. Looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth. Preserves bone. Lasts 20+ years. This is the gold standard.
  • Fixed Bridge: A prosthetic tooth anchored to the two adjacent teeth. Good option when adjacent teeth already have large fillings or crowns. Takes 2 visits, no surgery needed.
  • Removable Partial Denture: A lower-cost option, but less comfortable and doesn't prevent bone loss. Suitable when implants or bridges aren't possible.

Cost Perspective

We understand cost is a concern. But consider this: replacing one tooth with an implant now costs a fraction of what you'll spend treating the cascade of problems from leaving it empty — multiple shifted teeth, gum disease, more extractions, and eventually a much more complex restoration.

Dr. Mani Sundar's Advice: "I see this pattern constantly — a patient loses one molar, ignores it for 3–5 years, and comes back having lost two more teeth. Please don't wait. Even if you're not ready for an implant today, come in and let's discuss a plan."
