You've been brushing your teeth since childhood, but that doesn't mean you're doing it right. Here are five common brushing mistakes that even health-conscious adults make.
1. Brushing Too Hard
Scrubbing aggressively doesn't clean better — it damages your gums and wears down enamel. Use gentle, circular motions with a soft-bristled brush.
2. Not Brushing Long Enough
The average person brushes for just 45 seconds. You need a full 2 minutes — 30 seconds per quadrant — to clean effectively. Use a timer or an electric toothbrush with a built-in one.
3. Skipping Your Tongue
Bacteria love your tongue's rough surface. Not cleaning it is a major cause of bad breath. Gently brush or scrape your tongue every time you brush.
4. Using an Old Toothbrush
Replace your toothbrush every 3 months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. Worn bristles can't clean effectively and harbour bacteria.
5. Rinsing Immediately After Brushing
Surprise — you should not rinse your mouth immediately after brushing. Spit out the excess toothpaste, but let the fluoride sit on your teeth for continued protection.
Quick Fix: Switch to a soft-bristled brush, set a 2-minute timer, clean your tongue, and spit instead of rinsing. Your teeth will thank you.
