When Is Extraction Necessary?

• Severe decay that has destroyed too much tooth structure to restore
• Advanced gum disease causing loose teeth
• Impacted wisdom teeth causing pain, infection, or damage to adjacent teeth
• Overcrowding requiring tooth removal before orthodontic treatment
• Cracked or fractured teeth that cannot be repaired
• Failed root canal or recurring infection

Simple vs. Surgical Extraction

A simple extraction is performed on a visible tooth using local anaesthesia. It's quick and straightforward. A surgical extraction is needed for impacted or broken teeth that aren't fully visible — the dentist makes a small incision to access and remove the tooth.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the most commonly extracted teeth. When they're impacted, angled, or only partially erupted, they can cause pain, infection, cysts, and damage to neighboring teeth. Early removal is often recommended to prevent these complications.

After Extraction: What's Next?

We always discuss replacement options after extraction — dental implants, bridges, or dentures — to prevent bone loss and restore function. In some cases, we can plan an immediate implant at the time of extraction.
